A Framework for ICT

We got together and created the first structure for the Information and Communications Technology department; this was because their turnover of staff was too high and many people spent a good portion of their time training new starters.

We were getting great people, who did a great job, but then who moved on to a more senior role within another organisation. We found that this was because they felt that there was no career for them in ICT, within our organisation.
We got together with workers, managers, directors, unions, H&S and HR to look at the roles within ICT and to break those roles down to the constituent skills and behaviours required to completely perform that role. We ended up with an ICT Skills Framework.
We then took that Framework and looked where, if an individual lacked a skill, they would access the necessary training - it is available in-house or would they need to attend an external course or training? Were the funding / time / resources available to do this? If they were not then we made the changes to make it so.
ICT now have a fully realised career framework that they are now implementing within their department across the country - we await to see how successful it will be but it has been enthusiastically received by the workforce.
